Google has announced that its cloud gaming platform Stadia will shut down on January 18, 2023.
Google admits it’s shutting down the service because it didn’t gain traction with gamers like the company expected it to.
If you bought Stadia hardware through the Google Store or purchased games or add-on content through the Stadia store, then Google will be refunding all of your purchases.
They note that they expect all refunds to be completed by the middle of January. Players will still have access to their games library to play until the service closes on January 18th.
Google notes that they see opportunities to apply the technology powering Stadia to other parts of Google including YouTube, Google Play, and their efforts with Augmented Reality.
Smith’s Sentiment: That’s actually a bummer, but understandable. I think Stadia itself was a good service, but it is what it is. Refunding all purchases made is certainly rough, but good on Google for doing it. Certainly, better than the failure that was OnLive.
