The winner would go on to face Bianca Belair for the RAW Women’s Championship at Hell in a Cell.
Advertised during RAW, the match didn’t happen and was changed mid-show to being Asuka vs. Becky Lynch due to “Sasha Banks and Naomi leaving the arena.”
Reports indicate that Sasha and Naomi were unhappy with creative, and walked out despite Naomi being scheduled to win the match.
When Sasha Banks and Naomi arrived at the arena this afternoon, they were informed of their participation in the main event of tonight’s Monday Night Raw.
During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk and walked out.
They claimed they weren’t respected enough as tag team champions. And even though they had eight hours to rehearse and construct their match, they claimed they were uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents even though they’d had matches with those individuals in the past with no consequence. Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their contract.
We regret we were unable to deliver, as advertised, tonight’s main event.
Smith’s Sentiment: Who was the last person to walk out on WWE before a show? CM Punk in 2014? Last one I can remember before that would be Steve Austin in 2002. Point being, it doesn’t happen often.
I don’t believe WWE’s statement that they claimed to be uncomfortable being in the ring with two of their opponents. I do believe the part where they claimed they weren’t being respected as tag team champions.
Seems like they wanted to be pushed as the tag champs and defend the titles at Hell in a Cell against Doudrop and Nikki, and Vince for some reason was wanting to do Bianca defending against Naomi (technically a Smackdown wrestler).
I would say good on them for sticking up for themselves, but I’m also not a fan of people walking out before a show and not delivering what was advertised.
Personally, I think WWE should quietly strip them of the titles and be done having women’s tag titles. Vince is never going to take tag team wrestling (men or women’s) seriously. It’s been just another pointless title in a company filled with them. Tag divisions need actual tag teams, not two folks thrown together for a brief run as champs or to work a title program.
Will be interesting to see what happens next.
