I have reviewed the first five seasons of Stargate SG-1, and so far there has only been one disappointing season; the second one. In fact, each season got progressively better starting with the third one. Season five was great, but now that streak has ended with this sixth season.
Season six is a train wreck with only a handful of good episodes (although some of them are great). For starters, my big problem with this season is that Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemec) just wasn’t a good character. I have nothing against Corin personally, but his character on the show screamed second-rate Daniel Jackson replacement while Michael Shanks had his contract issues and was “killed off” at the end of season five. Of all the seasons from the Stargate franchise, this is my least favorite.
The season starts off well enough, with three good episodes (Redemption part 1 and 2, and Descent), but then descends into decent at best territory. This is the list of episodes from this season that I would rank from being decent to bad: Frozen, Shadow Play, The Other Guys, Allegiance, Unnatural Selection, Prometheus, Smoke and Mirrors, Prophecy, Memento, Forsaken, Disclosure, Metamorphous, Cure, Nightwalkers, and Sight Unseen. For those keeping score, that is 15 episodes (the season contained 22).
The good-to-great episodes (besides the three I already mentioned) were Abyss, The Changeling, and the great season-finale Full Circle. What do these three episodes have in common? Daniel Jackson is a big part of them. Go figure. Another great one is Paradise Lost, stars Colonel O’Neill and Colonel Maybourne. Jonas sucked, there’s just no getting around it.
The season just isn’t good. The diehard Stargate fans, like me, will have the set in our collections. But for everyone else, it isn’t “must see” television. It is easily the most forgettable season of any season in Stargate history. Thankfully, Jonas only lasted this one season and Daniel Jackson was able to return for season seven, and the show would get back on tract. But, that’s for another day.
Stargate SG-1 Season 6 gets a two out of five: FORGETTABLE.
